Food Organics Garden Organics bin

FOGO stands for Food Organics Garden Organics. It is a convenient and environmentally friendly way to dispose of your organic waste.

Your 240 litre FOGO bin (lime green lid) is emptied weekly on the same day.  
 

Acceptable items 

	✅ Vegetable peelings
	✅ Fruit and vegetable scraps, e.g. citrus, onion and garlic
	✅ Egg shells
	✅ Loose tea leaves
	✅ Coffee grounds
	✅ Fallen leaves and fruit
	✅ Bread, pasta and cereals
	✅ All meat, bones and chicken
	✅ Lawn clippings, weeds, leaves, small plants and roses
	✅ All fish scraps and seafood
	✅ Used newspaper and shredded paper
	✅ Pizza boxes and food-soiled paper
	✅ Paper towel
	✅ Tissues
	✅ Paper plates
	✅ Serviettes or napkins
	✅ Dead flowers
	✅ Dairy products, e.g. cheese, yoghurt and butter
	✅ All leftovers
	✅ Hair and animal fur
	✅ Pet droppings

Remember if it used to live or grow, then it's FOGO!

Unacceptable items 

	❌ General waste and liquids
	❌ Plastic bags. Use compostable liners only
	❌ Soil
	❌ Stumps and branches (greater than 3cm diameter or longer than 30cm)
	❌ Plant pots
	❌ Garden hose, garden tools, etc
	❌ Coffee cups
	❌ Coffee pods
	❌ Plastic packaging and soft plastics e.g. cling wrap
	❌ Magazines, catalogues and waxed paper
	❌ Non-compostable kitty litters
	❌ Treated and painted woods
	❌ Nappies, incontinence products and aids (even if they are biodegradable or compostable)
	❌ Baby wipes and make-up removal wipes

Putting your bin out correctly

• Your bin can be emptied at any time from 6am on your collection day, so it is advised that you put your bin out the night before
• Leave a one metre gap between each bin and any obstructions, e.g. trees, cars, power poles
• Place bins close to the road with handles facing your property
• Ensure bins are closed
• Do not over fill bins or leave waste beside them. This will not be collected
• Bins must not weigh more than 80 kilograms when collected
• Bins must be returned to your property within 48 hours after a scheduled collection day

Where does your waste go?

All food and garden waste collected from your household bins in the Macedon Ranges is transported to the Repurpose It facility in Epping where is converted into compost. To learn more about your FOGO, visit mrsc.vic.gov.au/FOGO
