Your glass-only bin (purple lid) is emptied once every four weeks.   In the Macedon Ranges Shire, glass does not belong in the recycling bin (yellow lid) and must be recycled separately in your 140 litre glass-only bin (purple lid). Acceptable items  ✅ Glass bottles such as wine, beer, spirits, olive oil, etc.✅ Glass jars and containers such as jam, pasta sauce, condiments etc. Note: Lids removed. Labels can stay on. Empty and rinse glass but it doesn't need to be spotless. If you put glass into plastic bags it cannot be recycled. * Ensure no food scraps or liquids are left in glass bottles or jars. * Remove lids. Small plastic lids can be placed in your general waste bin (red or dark green lid) or recycled at your local Resource Recovery Facility. Metal caps and lids can be placed in your recycling bin (yellow lid). PUTTING YOUR BIN OUT CORRECTLY Follow these steps to ensure your bin is put out correctly: * Put your bin out the night before your collection day * Leave a one metre gap between each bin and any obstructions, e.g. trees, cars, power poles * Place bins close to the road with handles facing your property * Ensure bins are closed * Do not overfill bins or leave rubbish beside them (overfilled bins will not be collected) * Bins must not weigh more than 80 kilograms * Bins must be returned to your property within 48 hours after a scheduled collection day WHERE DOES YOUR WASTE GO? Waste collected from your household glass-only bins is taken to ASQ in Eaglehawk and is reused in road construction materials and a range of other applications. Your general waste bin (red or dark green lid) is emptied fortnightly on the opposite week to your recycling bin (yellow lid).  Using your general waste bin and sending materials to landfill should always be a last resort. Your 140 litre general waste bin is for all general household waste that is not compostable or recyclable and cannot go in your FOGO, recycling or glass-only bins. If you put your recycling into plastic bags it cannot be recycled. * Deconstruct and flatten cardboard boxes to make more room in your recycling bin. * Items don’t need to be washed thoroughly before they are placed in the recycling bin. You need to ensure that items are empty so remove solid food scraps and liquids, maybe a light rinse. * Do not place glass in your recycling bin. * Soft plastics can be recycled in your household recycling bin by participating in the shire-wide soft plastics pilot. Soft plastics must be placed in special orange recycling bags provided by Council. FOGO stands for Food Organics Garden Organics. It is a convenient and environmentally friendly way to dispose of your organic waste. All food and garden waste collected from your household bins in the Macedon Ranges is transported to the Repurpose It facility in Epping where is converted into compost.
